Lower shipping cost, with less handling
Pool Distribution is the distribution of orders to numerous destination points within a particular geographic region. Characteristics include a high frequency of regular shipments in LTL quantities, typically in the 150 to 10,000 pound range. Pool
distribution represents a superior and cost effective alternative to the high cost of LTL shipments. Instead of LTL direct, pool distribution orders are shipped to a regional terminal in a volume shipment (linehaul). There the pool is off loaded, segregated and sorted by consignee, then reloaded onto local delivery trucks for delivery to various pool destinations.
Pool distribution reduces transit times, maintains shipment and temperature integrity, reduces claim potential due to less handling, allows pulling of orders by ship date versus order date, and allows a significant discount over LTL rates. Factors contributing to the cost effectiveness of pool distribution over LTL include: the number of pool points per pool, weight per shipment, frequency of deliveries, perishability, and distance from pool point (terminal) to consignee.
Taylor Distributing began performing pool distribution in 1850 as the Taylor Drayage Company with a horse and wagon. Today we cover Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, most of West Virginia, and the Chicago area. We call our service a "super pool" because from our location in Cincinnati we are uniquely positioned to serve a truly regional area. Some customers use us for distribution and others use us for handling OS&D issues such as damage, refusals, returns, or undeliverable loads.
We also perform the opposite of pool distribution, Consolidation (reverse pool distribution): the combining of LTL shipments at our facilities until a volume shipment is reached. This again allows significant cost savings to our customers by taking advantage of truckload rates and limiting LTL dock hits. This is also an excellent way to handle returns.
